In the early 1980s, employee democracy activist Dean Adams Curtis led the Hughes Employee Democracy Association which had as its goal employee ownership for Hughes workers, democratic elections of employees to the company's board of directors, and enhancing the amount of money going to medical research funded by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute due to greater productivity of the democratically engaged employee owners.
